Recommended Materials 

• pastels: as many as possible from hard to soft (student grade and Nu-pastel alone are not sufficient). Think of colors you might like to use in your scenes. Rembrandt, Girault, Sennelier, Holbein, Great American, Art Spectrum, Schmincke, Unison, etc.

• pastel paper: something with “tooth” to it, toned or white. (more substantial than old Canson Mi-Tientes paper) Art Spectrum or Colourfix, Canson Touch, Uart, Pastel Premier, La Carte, etc. 

For quick paintings, I often use these sizes: 12 x 12, 12 x 16 and 8 x 18. Bring precut whatever sizes youʼre comfortable with. A border is often useful to tape down the paper.

• rubbing alcohol , around 90%. And a medium-sized jar to dip a brush into.

• paint brush, maybe half inch wide, flats are best

• a pastel pencil to sketch your scene out with on pastel paper

• sketch pad and graphite pencil for thumbnails

• masking tape, (not blue painters tape)

• drawing board

• an old bristle brush to erase with

• a Viewcatcher. I’ll have them for sale if you cannot find one
