Celebrating our Pastel Laureates
PSWC’S Pastel Laureate is the highest level of membership awarded by the Pastel Society of the West Coast. It is awarded to honorees in recognition of their nationally or internationally significant contributions to the advancement of the pastel medium. The honoree’s impact on the advancement of pastel may be through teaching, writing and/or major contributions of their work in galleries or museums. Having won multiple awards in the Pastels USA exhibitions and volunteer service to PSWC may also be considered qualifying factors. The PSWC Board of Directors nominates and selects the recipient of this award.

Albert Handell

Albert Handell Fine Art
Albert began formal studies of drawing and anatomy at the age of sixteen. In 1954, he enrolled at the Art Students League of New York City. From 1961 to 1965, Albert lived and traveled in Europe. In Paris, he painted independently in his own studio, working from the model at L’Ecole de la Grande Chaumiere and at the Louvre, copying the old masters.
Albert lives and paints in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and teaches nationally and internationally. Since 1961, he has had over thirty one-man shows and received over seventy prizes and awards. His paintings are in numerous private and public collections and museums. He has authored numerous books and articles and, as a living master, is a sought after workshop instructor and judge.


Daniel E. Greene

Daniel E. Green N.A.
A resident of North Salem, New York, Mr. Greene was considered by The Encyclopedia Britannica to be the foremost pastelist in the United States. He has more than 1,000 of his
works in over 700 personal and public collections in the United States and abroad. Highly regarded as a formidable portrait artist, he was known for painting leaders in government, banking, education, industry and the arts.
Mr. Greene was honored with myriad accolades over his sixty-plus year career. Among the most significant are membership in the National Academy of Design in 1969, induction into the Pastel Society of America Hall of Fame in 1983 and the Oil Painters of America Hall of Fame in 1992, the 1999 Artist Fellowship Benjamin West Clinedinst medal for exceptional artistic achievement, and the 2001 Portrait Society of America Medal of Honor for a distinguished body of work.


Bob Gerbracht

Bob began studying art in junior high school in Erie, Pennsylvania. During World War II, he carried his oils, watercolors and brushes with him in combat; they fit nicely in a German gas mask canister he found. He earned his B.F.A. in Painting from the Yale School of Fine Art and his M.F.A. from the University of Southern California.
He taught in public schools, community colleges, the College of Notre Dame and the University of California. He began teaching his private classes and workshops in portrait and figure drawing and painting in 1979 in San Jose. His workshops took him all over the United States and Mexico. His pastels have been featured in numerous magazines and books, including Best of Pastel and Best of Pastel 2. At the age of 90, Bob was still teaching three classes per week. “I’m happiest when I’m teaching,” he said.

Founder first President of PSWC, workshop instructor, contributing editor for The Pastel Journal, author of A Painter’s Guide to Design and Composition (North Light).
Distinguished Pastelist, Pastel Society of the West Coast, Signature member of The Pastel Society of America and The Degas Pastel Society. Artist member, California Art Club and American Artists Professional League. Margot has exhibited her work in museums and national competitions coast to coast. She is listed in Who’s Who in American Art in every edition since 1993, and in Who’s Who in American Women, as well as featured in a number of books on pastel, including the recent Pure Color: The Best of Pastel, by Maureen Bloomfield.


Marbo Barnard

Marbo Barnard was born and raised in Japan, and came to the United States in 1956, starting to paint shortly afterwards. She had a consistent and successful artistic career. She enjoyed success in over 100 major juried exhibitions in the US and abroad, including the American Pastel Society, the Knickerbocker Artists, the IAPS, and numerous national pastel associations.
In addition to the office of President, her lengthy and indispensable tenure on the Board of the Pastel Society of the West Coast included overseeing the prestigious annual international exhibition Pastels U.S.A. which receives 400 to 500 entries from all over the world. In 2008 the PSWC presented her with the Pastel Laureate Award, the highest honor bestowed by that society. Her paintings have featured in various art magazines, including the Pastel Journal, February 2006, the Artist’s Magazine, and Gekan-Bijutsu Japan.


Duane Wakeham

Artist, lecturer, juror and workshop instructor, Duane has lived in California since1959 and now divides his time between his home in San Francisco and his studio in Sebastopol. The green and golden hills of Northern California with their clusters of oak trees and stands of eucalyptus and the tidelands along the central coast have been the primary source of inspiration for Duane for more than 40 years.
In 1995 Wakeham received double honors when he was named Distinguished Pastellist by the Pastel Society of the West Coast and Master Pastellist by the Pastel Society of America. He has had 27 solo exhibitions and his work is in public and private collections in the United States and Europe.
In addition to his landscape work in both pastels and oils, Wakeham maintains a weekly schedule of drawing and painting the figure.


Richard McKinley

Richard McKinley Fine Art
Richard has been a professional working artist over 40 years and has been teaching for nearly as long. In 2010 he was inducted into the Pastel Society of America Hall of Fame. That same year, he participated in the American Masters Exhibition at the Salmagundi Club NYC.
His inspiring demonstrations and his ability to share his wealth of knowledge make his workshops very popular among students. His work is represented in several national galleries and is in the permanent collection of the Butler Institute of American Art Museum.
An avid plein air painter, Richard divides his time between painting the locations he is passionate about, reinterpreting those paintings back in the studio, and instructing workshops.


Gerald Boyd

Gerald Boyd Fine Art
Gerald Boyd became interested in art as a career when, as a fourteen year old school boy, he won a statewide contest in Oregon for a pencil portrait, drawn from life, of his 89 year old grandfather. By his mid teens, he began using pastels and with the limited set he owned, gained some notoriety for portraits of fellow classmates and the principal of his high school in southern California’s San Fernando Valley.
Beginning in 1983, he became more involved with a local art society in Fremont, CA and by 1987 had earned Signature status with the Society of Western Artists in San Francisco and the Pastel Society of the West
Coast.
Jerry has taught classes and workshops, judged dozens of art shows both large and small,
and served twelve years on the board of the PSWC.


Dug Waggoner

Dug Waggoner Fine Art
Early in his life Dug’s family recognized his ability to draw, color, whittle, craft and create his art by any means necessary.
This Sacramento born, California native utilized his artistic skills that continued to follow him through high school, where he was named staff artist for the school’s newspaper. Junior college continued the progression of his talent and paved the way for the intensely artistic environment at the California College of the Arts in Oakland, CA.
Graduating with a BFA in Advertising Design opened the door to a 40 year career as an art director, graphic designer and illustrator in San Francisco bay area. Today Dug paints primarily in Soft Pastel but oil and watercolor are still drawn upon to satisfy his passion for creativity. And to that end the learning process continues.
Dug is still pinching himself for being included in a group show with 19 of his hero’s, friends and teachers. The Harrington Gallery at the Firehouse Art Center in Pleasanton, CA exhibited various renowned artists who paint with pastel, oil and watercolor which included four of Dug’s pastel paintings. The show ran from August 27, to October 22, 2022.


Kim Lordier

Kim Lordier Fine Art
Kim Lordier is a California Native and a longtime Pastel Society of the West Coast member. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco and University of San Francisco. Flight attendant, competitive horsewoman, and artist, her career path varied until the events of September 11, 2001, when she committed to her life’s work as an artist.
Kim is especially well-known for her paintings of the Western landscape, and her beautiful paintings that capture the strength and grace of horses, a subject about which she is passionate.
Kim’s paintings are in private and public collections throughout the country, and have been exhibited at the Autry Museum, Maynard Dixon Country, Coors Western Art Show, National Arts Club, Salmagundi Club and Forbes Gallery in New York, Haggin Museum, Pasadena Museum of California Art, Irvine Museum, Hilbert Museum, and the Laguna Art Museum.
Her work has been showcased on the cover of Art of the West, PleinAir Magazine, Southwest Art, and The Pastel Journal, as well as featured in Western Art and Architecture, Fine Art Connoisseur, and most recently the Pastel Society of the West Coast Magazine. Acknowledged by jurors and her peers, Kim has received recognition for her paintings at major plein air events, international magazine competitions, national pastel society shows and museum exhibitions.
A coveted workshop instructor, Kim is a Signature Member of the California Art Club, the Pastel Society of America, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association.


Terri Ford

Terri Ford is also a native Californian. She is an alumnus of the Academy of Art College, who realized a deep connection with pastels in 1987 and has worked with them since both in the studio and en plein air.
