LaVone Sterling, PSWC, PSA is primarily recognized as an American Impressionist.
LaVone is an award winning artist, author and art teacher. Her subjects of choice are landscape and portraits.
“As a child my sister and I were sent by train to stay each summer with an aunt in Northern California. My aunt was an artist and a teacher who filled our days with ‘art projects’. These took place at a long wooden table in her art studio where we learned to paint with oil and watercolor and to make clay pots and sculpture. It was the best part of every year until I went away to college.”
Education and Affiliations
After receiving both Bachelor and Master Degrees in Art and working as a Community College art teacher, LaVone began her career in fine art in 1980. For the last few years her medium of choice has been pastel. Quoting the artist: “Pastel is very forgiving and the brilliance of color is so exciting that it gives you permission to experiment.” LaVone paints a wide range of subjects, but focuses mainly on landscapes and portraits. LaVone is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, Pastel Society of the West Coast, Sierra Pastel Society and Alliance of California Artists. Her paintings appear in the 2015 Northlight Publishing Book entitled, Art Journey. Portraits and Figures and in Arts Alliance of Three Rivers Publishing book, Sierra Wonders. She was a finalist in The Artist’s Magazine 30th Art Competition 2013 and in The Artist’s Magazine 31st Art Competition 2014. Her work appeared in Southwest Art Magazine, October 2014 and Southwest Art Magazine January 2015. LaVone was an award winner in International Artist’s Magazine Challenge No. 84, Landscapes and appeared in the January 2015 Issue. LaVone’s demonstration/article entitled, The Importance of Composition and Value appears in the Oct/Nov 2016 issue of International Artist’s Magazine. LaVone’s painting, “Long Road Home” is on the cover of Valley Public Radio’s 2016 Issue of Audiophile Magazine and her painting, “Golden Glow” appears on the box lid of Sennelier Pastels Plein Air Landscape Set, 30 Colors.

LaVone lives in Visalia, CA. Her home is a few miles from Sequoia National Park. The foothills, mountains and nearby streams inspire much of her work.
