Artist Main Picture

Jodell Ryan, a native of Fresno California, became interested in painting as a child. She studied art in local schools, then married and set aside her paints and brushes while raising a family of five children.

In the summer of 1970, the paints and brushes were brought out again, and she has taken workshops with many artists, including George Post, Milliard Sheets, Dong Kingman, and Gerald Brommer.

She is a signature member of the Society of Western Artists, the Pastel Society of the West Coast and the Alliance of California Artists. She is also a juried Associate member of the Pastel Society of America. She has exhibited her paintings in many shows and has won over 70 awards, including 3 Best of Shows. She paints on location with a “En Plein Aire” group, and works with a model every week for her figure and portrait studies. She enjoys working in all media, and after doing a painting that requires tight realistic drawing or painting , she likes doing an intuitive work, pushing shape, color and texture around on the paper or canvas until the results are pleasing to her eye. She feels the change of pace and media allows her to keep a freshness in her work and balances the creative urge.
